How therapy works

You probably have some questions about how it all works. Especially if you haven’t had therapy in the past. The info below should give you some clarity. And if you have additional questions, please let me know.

No, you do not have to lie on a couch, unless you want to.  We will meet and get to know one another. You will have the opportunity to see who I am and how I work.  It’s important that you feel comfortable. Through our conversation, I will gather information about you and what situations you are facing.  You can feel free to ask me any questions you want. We will get clear on what it is you would like to work on.

I work from an eclectic framework, utilizing tools from different philosophies and treatment modalities.  In our work together you will come in, sit down in a comfortable chair or couch, and talk. There is no need to ‘do’ anything else.

Sessions are 50 minutes.  We will decide the frequency at which you want to come during our first meeting – it’s up to you.  Therapy can move quickly or more slowly depending on the issues you want to work on. I am of the mind that therapy doesn’t need to take a long time.

Whether therapy is covered and how much is covered depends on your insurance policy.  A quick call to your insurance company should inform you of your particular policy’s benefits. Therapy is worth it – it is an investment in your life.  You will feel better when you are managing your life well and in accordance with what is important to you. The goal is to help empower you to find ways to make changes. We will comfortably challenge you to think of things in new and different ways.

Sometimes there are quick fixes.  Sometimes issues take longer to resolve.  The work you are willing to put into the process will help dictate the length of time it takes. You should stay in therapy only as long as you feel it is helpful to you.

During our initial conversation, you will come to understand if we are a good fit meaning you will decide if you feel comfortable talking about things, feel that I am someone you can easily talk to and that my style is compatible with you. I work with adults who want to make changes in their lives, whether small or larger life choices.
